For referring providers

Foot & Ankle Referrals, Second Opinions & Complex Cases

Dr. Bourke welcomes referrals for reconstructive problems, ankle arthritis, trauma, and patients who have been told nothing more can be done. His fellowship in reconstructive foot and ankle surgery and trauma was built for exactly these cases.

Unsure whether a patient needs surgery?

Unsure whether a patient needs surgery? Referrals for diagnosis and treatment planning are welcome; surgical treatment is not assumed.

Dr. Bourke’s stated approach is conservative first: non-surgical therapies and rehabilitation are prioritized whenever possible, and surgery is used when it actually improves the patient’s situation. That makes a referral useful even when the answer turns out not to be an operation — for diagnosis, for a treatment plan, or for a second opinion before a decision is made.

Conditions particularly welcome

  • Ankle arthritis and total ankle replacement evaluations
  • Failed prior foot or ankle surgery
  • Revision reconstruction
  • Complex deformity
  • Sports injuries, including Achilles problems and ankle instability
  • Fractures and trauma, including post-traumatic arthritis
  • Second opinions, with imaging review
  • Runners who cannot return to activity
  • Complex foot & ankle reconstruction
  • Foot & ankle trauma and post-traumatic arthritis

Second opinions

Second opinions, complex reconstruction, and failed prior foot or ankle surgery are a referral focus of the practice. Patients who have been told minimally invasive surgery is their only option — or that it could never work for them — patients with a previous operation that has left pain or a deformity that has returned, and patients whose joint is arthritic and whose plan has not addressed that, are all welcome for review. Bring imaging and any prior operative reports to the visit.

How to refer

For patients, too

If you are a patient rather than a referring clinician, the same route applies: call (703) 777-3262 or book through The Orthopedic Group, and bring your imaging and any prior operative reports to your first visit.
